SEC 2026 XBRL Taxonomies Update

What Happened

Earlier this year, the SEC’s EDGAR system was upgraded to EDGAR Release 26.1 and now supports the 2026 XBRL taxonomies. Each 2026 taxonomy is compatible only with other 2026 taxonomies—meaning filers cannot mix and match 2026 taxonomies with 2025 versions in a single submission.

While the update affects multiple taxonomies, this report focuses on the changes to the Open-End Fund (OEF) 2026 taxonomy. The full SEC announcement is available here: 2026 XBRL Taxonomies Update.

Open-End Fund (OEF) 2026

The OEF 2026 taxonomy alters no concepts or types from the OEF 2025 taxonomy, but it makes three technical changes:

  1. Definition link change. The 2026 OEF taxonomy requires changing custom definition arcs with target role http://fasb.org/us-gaap/role/eedm/ExtensibleEnumerationLists to target role http://fasb.org/srt/role/srt-eedm/ExtensibleEnumerationLists.
  2. Presentation/definition linkbase additions. Two concepts already in the shareholder report role—oef:ShareholderReportAnnualOrSemiAnnual and oef:AnnlOrSemiAnnlStatementTextBlock—were added to the Form N-CSR cover page role to improve rendering.
  3. Reference linkbase cleanup. A typographical correction in one reference changed the word ‘instrution’ to ‘instruction’. Unnecessary XLink tags were removed from the reference linkbase.

What You Need to Know

  • Timing and compatibility. EDGAR will accept either the 2026 or 2025 taxonomy versions, but the SEC strongly encourages filers to use the most recent version. Filers should consider transitioning to the 2026 taxonomies for the earliest reporting period ending on or after March 16, 2026, but not for reporting periods ending before March 16, 2026. Prior versions of taxonomies (other than IFRS) are not compatible with the 2026 taxonomies.
  • Sunset of older versions. The staff does not anticipate the removal of the 2024 versions of any taxonomies to occur before June 2026, so 2024-version filings remain accepted for now but should be migrated.
