SEC Shares Updated Guidance Regarding EDGAR File Size Limits

On Jan. 30, 2026, the EDGAR Business Office announced that updated guidance is available regarding file size limits. The guidance also includes information regarding how filers can ensure that their file size meets the EDGAR requirements.

There are several new considerations filers should take into account. Filers should be mindful of file size limits — 200 MB (including all attachments), except:

  • Submission Types ABS-EE, ABS-EE/A, NPORT-NP, NPORT-NP/A, NPORT-P, and NPORT-P/A which may not exceed 600 MB.

Tips for Ensuring File Size Meets EDGAR Requirements

The EDGAR Business Office also offered the following suggestions:

  • Eliminate repetitive or unnecessary HTML and/or CSS.
  • Do not embed images into HTML using Base64 encoding.
  • Only provide one copy of each unique image in the filing.
  • Compress images in lossy JPG format.
  • Add page containers.

Filers should avoid uploading the same image multiple times. When it is necessary to repeat an image in a filing, such as a company logo, filers should upload one version of that image as an attachment to the submission and use the HTML <img> tag in multiple locations within the filing to point to the attached image.

What Does This Mean for Me?

Filers should review the updated guidance to ensure they are following these new standards. It’s important to note that company filings for multiple series (e.g., N-CSR, N-PX) can often be filed separately by series or groups of series.
